When you learned to ride a bike did you do it alone by trial and error? Did you learn it from a book? For most of us there was someone showing us how. They gave instructions and encouragement and before long we gave it our best shot. With a few more pointers we were on our own and then we practiced, practiced, practiced. For more than 20 years Randy has applied this kind of common sense approach to teaching musical improvisation. Students are amazed by how quickly and easily they are able to play simple, attainable, musical ideas that form the building blocks of improvisation.

What is Jazz Philharmonic?
This unique method book and play-along CD is designed for string players with a wide range of abilities that want to learn to improvise on their instrument. It's written by Randy Sabien and Bob Phillips (author of Fiddler’s Philharmonic) and published by Alfred Publishing Company. There are 12 tunes specifically designed to teach violin, viola, cello and bass to “groove for the first time” and expand their ability into an advanced level of improvisation. The first book has been so successful that Book II is due to be published early in 2003. It can be used both in the classroom or individually. Click here to order.
